For example bees are being harmed by these pesticides and are being prevented from carrying out their natural duties on earth. Pesticides do not just impact the food we eat, but negatively impact the wildlife. These areas attract “new and re-colonizing species to the organic area,” that helps to continue the cycle of life ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). Furthermore, the “maintenance of natural area within and around organic fields and absence of chemical inputs create suitable habitats for wildlife” ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). Organic agriculture will keep the environment more stable and available to grow crops in the future. This simple fact explains the long-term results of producing organic food. The more organic carbon that is in the soil the more protection the soil has against climate change ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). “Organic agriculture contributes to mitigating the greenhouse effect and global warming through its ability to sequester carbon in the soil” ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). Alongside positively impacting the soil organic farming positively affects the air. Organic agriculture takes a proactive approach in maintaining the environment instead of leaving problems for future generations to deal with ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). The lasting impact of these techniques allows soil to have “better nutrient retentive abilities and greatly reduces the risk of ground water pollution ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). Farmers also protect the genetic make-up of the native species in their farming areas by not using hurtful chemicals (Ronald xii). “Farmers produce food while establishing an ecological balance to prevent soil fertility and pest problems” ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). These types of fertilizers enhance the soil structure and water infiltration ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). In the production of organic food, organic fertilizers are used that are made of compost, animal manure and green manure ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). These methods of farming increase the life of the soil and make it more stable for the future ("What Are the Environmental Benefits of Organic Agriculture?"). “Organic farmers rely on crop rotation, cover crops, compost and mechanical cultivation to maintain soil productivity and fertility, to supply plant nutrients” (Ronald x). This method of farming is used to help better preserve the soil of the land for the future instead of solely focusing on crops being produced now. Ronald and Raoul explain that organic food is produced through “an ecologically-based farming method that avoids or largely excludes the use of synthetic fertilizers and pesticides” (x). Organic food alternatives are a better option because organic products positively impact farmers and the environment however the health benefits for people are often misconstrued. Many people believe that by choosing organic alternatives there problems will be solved and they will be in good health. This problem is becoming a more prevalent issue and steps need to be taken to turn the problems of obesity around. Fast food restaurants are increasing in the U.S. There are nearly 105,000 total commercial stores between the top 15 fast food chains in the nation (McConnell & Bhasin).
